How To Create Better Travel Photos: Part Three - Enhancing the Magic of Your Road Trip Photographs

Discover the Importance of Editing:

Editing is like adding a sprinkle of magic to your already fabulous travel photographs. It allows you to fine-tune colours, adjust exposure, and bring out hidden details. Don't be afraid to experiment and find your unique editing style. Whether you prefer vibrant and bold or soft and dreamy, let your creative vision guide you as you enhance your images.

Explore Software Options:

When it comes to editing software, there's a wide range of options to choose from. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are popular choices for their powerful editing capabilities and my personal choice of editing software. They offer a range of tools to adjust colours, exposure, and composition. If you're just starting out, consider exploring user-friendly mobile editing apps like VSCO or Canva, which offer a plethora of creative options at your fingertips. However! Don’t overlook the built-in editing software on your phone and tablet. These have come a long way in a few short years.

Choose an app or software you’re comfortable and confident using.

You remember from the first article in this series (here if you’ve missed it) I mentioned that I’ll sometimes challenge myself to just use my iPhone to capture a series of travel images. Well, I did just that last year on a trip to Venice with my daughter. Then I used the Lightroom app on my iPad to edit them all.

Maintaining Authenticity:

While editing can work wonders, it's important to strike a balance and maintain the authenticity of your travel photos. Avoid excessive editing that transforms the scene beyond recognition. Preserve the essence and mood you captured in camera, enhancing it subtly rather than overpowering it. Remember, the goal is to enhance, not distort, the memories you've created. When I apply a filter to some of the shots I take, I’ll always make simple exposure and highlight adjustments first. Then if I feel a filter will enhance the overall look, I’ll do so, but then adjust the intensity of that filter to make it a subtle addition rather than a full-on assault of the senses.

Backing Up:

Imagine the heartbreak of losing all your precious travel photos due to a technical glitch or an unfortunate mishap. To avoid this nightmare scenario, create backups of your images. Invest in portable hard drives or cloud storage services to ensure your memories are safe and sound. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

I recently bought a new external drive to store my RAW images on my travels. It’s a 2TB solid-state drive, yet it’s as light as a feather and only the size of a matchbook. Even I’m amazed at the portability of external drives these days.

My 2TB SSD next to a match book. File storage is incredibly portable, don’t make excuses for not having enough memory.

Sharing:

Social media platforms seem to be arriving, departing, self-destructing and changing on a daily basis. But, don’t forget to share your favourite moments with interested parties. Connect with fellow travellers, and inspire others to embark on their own escapades. Don't forget to add engaging captions that tell the stories behind your images and invite others to join in the journey. However, nobody needs the equivalent of Uncle Tom and his 300-image slide show of “My first trip to London”. Edit down and only show your best and most interesting images to the world.

Relive the Journey in Print:

There's something magical about flipping through the pages of a photo book or album filled with your travel memories. Consider creating a physical keepsake that allows you to relive your journey. Compile your favourite shots, add captions, and create a narrative that tells the story of your adventure. It's a tangible reminder of the incredible moments you experienced along the open road. Companies like Blurb are ideal for this.

Displaying Your Masterpieces:

Take your travel photos off the digital realm and bring them to life by printing and framing your favourite shots. Whether it's a large canvas print gracing your living room wall or a small framed image on your bedside table, displaying your photographs adds a personal touch to your living space and allows you to revisit those cherished memories every day.

I always have a couple of images of mine displayed in my office.

I’ll often print a large-scale image from one of my adventures and frame it for my office. Every time I look at it, I'm transported back to that awe-inspiring moment. They’re a physical reminder of an incredible journey I took.

Take Time to Reminisce:

As the excitement of your travels fade, take time to reflect on the journey and cherish the memories you've created. Sit down with your photos, reminisce about the moments captured, and allow yourself to be transported back to the open road. Share your experiences with loved ones and relive the emotions that accompanied each shot. The beauty of photography lies in its ability to evoke powerful memories and emotions long after the journey is over.

Congratulations, travel photographers, on completing this epic journey through editing, sharing, and preserving your amazing travel photographs! By embracing the art of editing, you've added your personal touch to your travel photos, enhancing their visual impact. Through sharing, you've connected with fellow travellers, inspired others, and built a community around your adventures. And by preserving your memories, you've ensured that the magic of your adventures live on through tangible keepsakes and framed masterpieces. Now, sit back, relax, and relish in the joy of your incredible travels, knowing that your photographs will continue to transport you back to those unforgettable moments whenever you desire. Safe travels, fellow photographers!
